The creators of this mini-opera were inspired by the novella Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The vocal parts of the two onstage characters—the "underground" collegiate assessor and the prostitute Liza—are "commented on" by two additional offstage voices that break in with words and quotations from Dostoevsky’s text, adding a polyphonic dimension to the monologues.
Alongside a classical instrumental ensemble, the score incorporates an acoustic guitar, the rustling and whistling of speakers, and the sound of small motors. Against the backdrop of a multimedia installation, the characters experience an existential drama, descending to the very depths, becoming aware of their own "I," and returning to a sense of universal love.
